Wedmore in Bloom
Wedmore in Bloom Home
Wedmore in Bloom was formed in 2005 by a group of volunteers who were keen to enhance the appearance of the village by planting and maintaining flowers and shrubs. This has developed so that there are now 52 tubs planted for winter, spring and then summer displays, areas of wild flowers and permanent sustainable planting.
Much of the community is involved with caring for these areas. Funding is obtained through donations from local residents, businesses, clubs, the Parish Council, PCC and the Wedmore Real Ale Festival.
Because of the success of this initiative the group was encouraged to enter the South West in Bloom competition achieving the following successes in the large village category:
2006 & 2007 Silver Gilt
2008, 2009 & 2010 Gold and Cox Cup for best large village in the South West.
In 2009 we were awarded the silver salver for best portfolio.
Other successes have been a Local Roots award for the use of willow and several Neighbourhood Awards.
In 2009 & 2010 Wedmore was invited to enter the national RHS Britain in Bloom competition and it was a great achievement to be awarded Gold on both occasions.
At present the group is taking a break from competition but is still involved in maintaining the appearance of the village keeping it filled with colourful displays throughout the year.
New volunteers are always welcome. Gardening expertise is not necessary, just a willingness to be involved.
There is a work party on the second Saturday of each month, meeting at 09.30 outside The George. Afterwards everyone gets together for a chat over coffee.
We urgently need to increase the numbers in our friendly group of volunteers. We have a work party in the village on the second Saturday each month, followed by coffee. In between we water and look after the displays. We would welcome help from anyone who can offer a little of their time. It need not be at the work parties, if Saturday mornings are inconvenient, and no knowledge of plants is necessary. We particularly need more men in the team, who enjoy DIY, as we often have jobs of that nature to do.
Contact details are above.
Wedmore in Bloom is an active and social group supported financially by local residents and organizations.
To enhance the appearance of the village throughout the year with permanent and container planting.
We meet at the George on the second Saturday of each month at 09.30 and after the work party we get together for coffee.
