Eleanor Vale - a new mystery Opera
11th, 13th and 14th July 2012 Eleanor Vale is Wedmore Opera's first specially commissioned opera since 2000. It has been composed by John Barber, with words by Peter Cann and design by Charlie Cridlan. John has had work performed at the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne and St Martin-in-the-Fields and his community opera for the 2011 Spitalfields Festival, We Are Shadows, attracted rave reviews.
It is 1900. A young woman arrives, unannounced, in the Somerset village of Blackmore. Intelligent, vivacious and unconventional, she quickly makes an impression.
The headmaster offers her a job as an assistant teacher. His wife, also a teacher, disapproves. So do the older women of the village. She reminds them of someone or something from the past, but they can't quite pin it down.
As Eleanor's influence over the children, men and younger women of the village grows stronger, a showdown becomes inevitable.
