A beautiful weekend of hot sunny weather brought over 830 visitors to Wedmore’s Hidden Gardens and altogether a total of £10,000 was raised to support St Mary’s church.  Revd Richard Neill said “the sum raised may well make some things possible that might not otherwise have been so”.

Huge thanks go to the hundred or so people who helped to make this weekend such a spectacular success by making and serving lunches, teas, baking cakes and all those others behind the scenes but especially the gardeners who have worked hard all year to make their gardens “show ready”.

There was a wonderfully happy atmosphere all over the village as everyone enjoyed the gardens and the weather.

Wedmore is renowned amongst visitors as the Jewel of the Somerset Levels.  Visitors come for the shopping and the welcome in the village.

What they miss is the beauty and variety of the gardens which are hidden behind houses and walls, though they can occasionally be glimpsed over hedges and through gates.

On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June ten of those gardens will open their gates to let visitors see what lies behind the walls and hedges.

Tickets and programmes, with maps, will be on sale at St Mary’s church and at each garden from 10.30 each day.  Light lunches and wine will be served at one of the gardens and teas, coffees with cake, and ice creams will be served at the church and in another garden.  There will also be a plant stall.

Entry to all ten of the gardens is £8 per person, children free.  The gardens will be open from 10.30 am to 5 pm.  All proceeds will go towards the upkeep of St Mary’s Church.

There is free parking at two car parks – one in the centre of the village, off the Cheddar Road or The Lerburne and the other at the recreation ground  on the Blackford Road, close to 4 gardens in Plud Street.

The gardens which will be open are:

  • Bennelong House, Plud Street – lunches
  • Quinneys, Plud Street
  • Damson Cottage, Plud Street
  • Tanglewood Plud Street – teas, coffees and ice creams
  • Mulberry House, West End
  • The Ridings, Corner of West End and Sand Road
  • Cotswold, Guildhall Lane – Plant stall next door
  • Glanville Lodge, Glanville Road
  • Lower Mead, Grants Lane
  • Applegarth,  Mill Lane

Wedmore’s Hidden Gardens – Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 June Missed the Chelsea Flower Show? Then come to Wedmore! Very soon Wedmore’s Hidden Gardens will throw open their gates for a whole weekend to welcome visitors to see the work which has been going on for months to ensure they are at their absolute best. Now the warmth and long days have brought the plants on beautifully and everything is blooming prolifically to produce a splendid show. Usually hidden behind walls and hedges, there is huge variety in the gardens. Some are large, some small, formal and informal, shady and sunny, flowers and fruit, vegetables, greenhouses – lots to see and explore.

They all reflect the individual character of their creators and are just waiting to welcome visitors. Lunches will be served in one garden with coffees and cream teas and cakes at St Mary’s church and in another garden.

There are two car parks in the village – off the Cheddar Road / Lerburne and at the playing fields and we hope that as many visitors as possible will use them and walk between gardens as we are anticipating large numbers of visitors.
