WW1 History Book

I am delighted to report that ‘The Isle of Wedmore Remembers the First World War, 1914-1919’ has finally been published!

This 370 -page long soft back book is based on research carried out in local and national archives, as well as photographs, artefacts and letters donated by the local community that made up the mainstay of the exhibition held in Wedmore Village Hall in November 2014 that marked the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.  The book contains detailed biographies of the 58 local serviceman who died between 1914-1920, as well as a list of over 400 men who donned uniform and served between 1914-19 in the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Flying Corps as well as in various contingents from all over the British Empire. A substantial part of the book also looks at life on the Home Front, including the vital contribution made by local farmers in producing foodstuffs and the wide range of voluntary work carried out by the wider community in support of their menfolk serving overseas. A large number of newly discovered black and white photographs are included in the book, as well as various colour images of original documents, postcards and other memorabilia brought home by local serviceman.
