Wedmore First School Academy was formed in 1876.
The present school moved to its current attractive site with large grounds and views of fields and orchards in 1990. The school was extended in 2016/17 creating four new large and airy classrooms linked to the original school building.
We are fortunate to have our own heated outdoor swimming pool, a vegetable garden and polytunnel plus extensive playing areas, including an activity trail. The adjoining sports facilities can also be accessed by the school, including an all-weather surface sports pitch which we use regularly for games sessions.
We play an integral role in the life of Wedmore village, which enjoys a particularly strong and vibrant sense of community. Our staff and pupils participate in numerous local events and regularly attend services at St. Mary's Church. Although not affiliated to a particular religious body, religious education at the school is Christian-based and non-denominational.
Our school meals are freshly prepared on site every day and offer pupils great nutrition and choice. We offer extended care to pupils on site before and after school.
On the 1st September 2016, we became part of a multi academy trust known as the Wessex Learning Trust. The trust comprises 8 schools within the Cheddar Valley geographic area. The multi academy trust can offer educational provision from ages 2 – 19. There is a strong sense of partnership between the 8 schools and a commitment to providing a top-quality education for all children at every stage of learning.

Wedmore First School Nursery provides excellent care and education for children aged from 2 to 4 between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm all year round.
The nursery is led by an Early Years teacher with a well - qualified team of nursery assistants. The team values good relationships with parents and carers. They build a partnership between each child’s home and the nursery, celebrating each child's successes at home and in the nursery.
We aim to make children feel nurtured and stimulated in a warm and friendly environment in which learning through play is the cornerstone of our ethos. We foster strong links with reception classes and our nursery classes enjoy the school’s resources eg the activity hall for physical development activities, music and drama. We have forest school provision within the school grounds, activities in the school garden and swimming lessons with a qualified instructor during the second part of the summer term.
We offer safe and secure rooms with appropriate provision for two year olds and three to four year olds in our recently renovated building. The nursery ensures a safe, stimulating, happy and rich learning environment which has a balanced Earl Years Foundation Stage curriculum covering the six learning goals. Our nursery offers opportunities for children to explore, investigate and develop their creativity. We ensure there is a variety of curriculum activities available each day enabling children to develop skills and follow their individual interests.. We provide nutritious meals and snacks which are all prepared in the kitchen of the school. The morning and afternoon snacks are served in the nursery, lunch is eaten in the main school hall before the school aged children start eating.

Wedmore in Bloom is a friendly group of volunteers who are keen to keep Wedmore looking beautiful throughout the seasons, by planting and maintaining flowers and shrubs, in and around the village.

What we do
In late Spring and early Autumn, we plant up 69 troughs and tubs for seasonal colour throughout the year and continue to find new places in the village to enhance with attractive floral displays. Last year, 4000 bulbs and plants were planted. In addition to seasonal planting, volunteers also maintain several existing areas of permanent, sustainable planting.
How you can be involved
Work Party: New volunteers are always welcome at Wedmore In Bloom monthly task days. We meet at 9.30 am, outside The George, on the second Saturday of the month, when jobs are allocated. Seasonal planting is one of the major tasks, as well as ongoing maintenance, weeding and new planting initiatives. After an hour’s work, we meet up for refreshments and a friendly chat.
A desire to keep Wedmore blooming beautifully is the only essential skill necessary, so why not bring a trowel and join in?
Watering: Watering the many troughs and tubs is an essential job, especially in the summer, so additional helpers are always needed. If you can help with this task, please get in touch. Your offer will be gratefully received.

As well as our monthly post-work party coffee gatherings, our social events include a winter dinner and AGM, a spring coffee morning and plant sale and an alfresco summer lunch for volunteers and WIB sponsors.
History
Wedmore in Bloom was founded in 2005 and the volunteers at that time were encouraged to enter the South West in Bloom competition. After yearly RHS Britain in Bloom awards from 2006, Wedmore represented the South West in the large village category, winning gold in 2010 and 2011.
That original vision and energy continue to inspire today’s volunteers.
Fundraising
Wedmore in Bloom relies on villagers, local businesses and local societies for funding.
