Important News from the Wedmore Parish Council – August 2024

Parish Council Business

Hello Friends, what a lovely few weeks since I spoke to you all last. I’ve embraced the warmer weather and have tried to be out and about meeting you, discussing ideas, and recruiting – more about that in a minute! Walking around the Parish does bring a whole new perspective to the place. I love that so many of you will stop for a chat or wave as you drive by, it’s just such a lovely feeling to be ‘seen’.

I was speaking to someone the other day who said it’s so sad that there are so few children in the village nowadays, despite all of the new houses. It got me thinking, as someone who knows that there are plenty of children in the village, many of them very active members of the various clubs and groups, everyone is living a different experience of the village. For people like me, in the throes of family life, ferrying children between clubs and trips, schools, and sports matches, we’re maybe not as visible in the village, but we’re still here doing what we can to support it, sustain it, to help out and enjoy it!

Being part of the Parish Council is much like being part of a similar family, each member has their schedule, commitments and experiences, which means some councillors are more visible in the Parish than others. Regardless, they’re all here doing their bit. We’re here to listen, fight for you, voice your opinions, and respond to positive and negative feedback. The thing is, it’s much easier when we’re all on the same page, and that doesn’t always mean we have to agree, or that we can change the outcome, but if we all understand that we’re all doing our best surely mutual respect goes a long way to ensuring a bright future for all of us!

Now, that leads me on nicely to introducing you to the latest member of the ‘family’, Alistair Hopkins. He’s already an active member of the Men’s Shed and is loving being part of the village, if you see him out and about, please say hello. Speaking of new councillors, you may remember I introduced councillor Bill Smart a couple of issues ago. Well, I’m pleased to say he has taken to the role like a duck to water and has been doing great work on behalf of the Parish regarding the flooding issues experienced by many over the winter. He has been able to secure support from Glastonbury Town Council, Godney Parish Council, Meare and Westhay Parish Council, St Cuthbert Out Parish Council, Shepton Mallet Town Council, Street Parish Council, Wedmore Parish Council, Wookey Parish Council who are now requesting urgent dredging of the River Brue due to severe recent flooding. Previous plans were delayed despite available funding. The Somerset Rivers Authority confirms funds
may still be accessible. Councillor Smart, together with Councillor Farley (Chair of Wedmore Parish Council) will coordinate efforts and I will continue to keep you updated on progress.

Right, I’ve used up the word count for this month, with so much still to say! You’ll have to stop by again next month and I’ll try again.
