Agratas supply chain opportunities event announced

Businesses across Somerset are invited to find out more about supply chain opportunities at the Agratas battery cell facility near Bridgwater.

From cleaning to catering, steelwork to landscaping; a supplier event is being run by Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM), Agratas’ primary contractor for construction of the first of 3 proposed buildings at the Gravity site in Puriton.

Taking place at the Canalside Conference Centre in Bridgwater on Tuesday, 8 October 2024 between 8am to 12pm, it’s aimed at Somerset-based small or medium-sized business interested in working in or with the construction sector.

DCC YouTube video: CDS Mobile boost scheme praised for being “transformational”

We’re pleased to share that Connecting Devon and Somerset’s (CDS) Mobile Boost Voucher Scheme has relaunched with a £430,000 investment through the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s (HotSWLEP) Growth Deal. The scheme is available to businesses and homes in Somerset and Devon offering vouchers of up to £1,300 towards technology to help improve indoor mobile coverage and connectivity.

Applicant Peter Samwell, who lives near the Blackdown Hills, described the scheme’s benefits as an “absolute revelation”.

Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) is a local government-led partnership which helps to deliver next generation broadband infrastructure to areas where the market has failed to invest.

Over 326,000 homes and businesses already have access to superfast broadband as a direct result of investment by CDS – that’s more than any other broadband programme in England.

Get your business ready for Simpler Recycling

If you run a business, you need to make sure you’re recycling.

Every business is responsible for its waste and from 1 April 2025, you’ll need to ensure the following materials are recycled:

  • Food waste
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Cartons
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Food tins and drinks cans, foil and aerosols
  • Plastic bottles and pots tubs and trays
  • From 2027, plastic films

The changes mean that whether at home or in the office, people can recycle the same materials.

Traders reminded to ‘ask for ID’ after another shop owner is fined for selling vapes

The owner of a vape shop has been ordered to pay fines and costs of £3,550 after he admitted selling vapes to a customer under the age of 18.

It’s the second prosecution for selling vapes to an underage customer in the service area in as many months after a shop owner in Bridgwater was sentenced in August.

Now, shops that sell vapes are once again reminded to review their procedures for selling age restricted goods to minors.

Free workshop to create sustainable profitability for your business

The Heart of the South West Growth Hub is holding a free ‘Building Your Digital Business Plan’ workshop for small business owners in Somerset on Tuesday, 12 November 2024, between 1.45pm and 4.45pm at the Glass Box, Taunton Library, Taunton.

This hands-on workshop will cover:

  • Digital business templates and toolkit
  • Ultimate checklist for your business
  • Sustainable revenues for bottom-line profitability
  • Digital Action Plan

The event is being delivered by Peter K Doyle, Growth Hub Digital Business Adviser, in conjunction with Taunton Chamber. There’ll be light refreshments (to purchase) and an opportunity for you to connect and network with other like-minded business owners.

Realising the Remarkable

Enterprise Nation and VistaPrint have joined forces to provide cash grants worth £60,000 to the UK’s small business community. Realising the Remarkable’ is a cash grant programme which has been created to help entrepreneurs start or grow their businesses and reach their full potential. Through the programme, small firms can win a cash prize, alongside marketing, design support and expertise, to help their business thrive.

The fund will distribute £60,000 to small businesses in the UK to help them realise their business ambitions. 20 small businesses will each receive £3,000, as well as other benefits. The deadline for applications is 31 October 2024.

This funding is from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation and the competition closes on Wednesday, 23 October 2024.

TechX Clean Energy Accelerator

Clean energy start-ups can apply to take part in the TechX Clean Energy Accelerator starting in February 2025. This is an 18-week programme of mentoring, business support and prototype development along with a grant of up to £50,000.

Your business must be developing a novel clean energy technology and all technologies accepted to the programme need to have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Technologies must have industrial applications: technologies solely with commercial or residential applications are out of scope.

Applicants must be committed to participating in the 18-week programme which includes 4 in-person weeks. Deadline is 27 October 2024.
