Wedmore Parish Clerk Update
I hope you’ve all been enjoying the summer. It certainly feels as though the village has been buzzing over the past few weeks. Local events and people simply making the most of our wonderful village and open spaces; it’s been lovely to see so many people out and about. One thing that always strikes me is just how much of what makes Wedmore special comes from local people giving their time. Whether it’s maintaining footpaths, organising community events or quietly helping neighbours, there’s a huge amount of goodwill that often goes unnoticed, but it really is what makes our parish such a wonderful place to live.
One of the highlights for the Parish Council this month has been supporting some fantastic local organisations through our Community Grant Scheme. We were delighted to award grants totalling £3,144.50, including support for Wedmore Village Hall towards a replacement cooker for the kitchen, Wedmore by Lamplight to help with this year’s event, and Theale Show towards essential safety arrangements. These facilities and events are at the heart of village life, and we’re proud to be able to lend a helping hand.
Planning also continues to keep us busy. Alongside considering individual planning applications, we’re looking ahead at the bigger picture as Somerset develops its new Local Plan, helping to ensure that any future development reflects the character of Wedmore while protecting everything that makes our parish so special.
We’ve also been approached by Somerset Council about the possibility of taking on responsibility for maintaining some local assets and open spaces. At this stage we’ve simply asked for much more information. Before any decisions are made, we’ll want to fully understand the costs, responsibilities and long-term implications to make sure any proposals represent good value for residents and are in the best interests of our community.
Behind the scenes, we’re continuing to improve the way the Council operates, reviewing our policies and investing in better technology so we can deliver services efficiently, work securely and continue to provide the best service we can for residents.
A huge thank you once again goes to Wedmore Men’s Shed for their fantastic work clearing and improving footpaths ahead of the Big Ramble. Their efforts, alongside so many other volunteers across the parish, make a real difference and are greatly appreciated.

Did you know? Wedmore Parish is home to around 3,288 residents and covers more than 4,100 hectares (around 10,300 acres), making it one of Somerset’s larger parishes geographically. But the parish is much more than the village itself. It also includes Blackford, Cocklake, Crickham, Heath House, Theale, Sand and several smaller hamlets, all represented by your Parish Council.
Finally, a little reminder that we all play a part in keeping Wedmore looking its best. If you’re able to spare a few minutes while you’re out and about, please pick up any litter you spot, trim back hedges that overhang pavements or footpaths, pick up after your dogs and report any damaged benches, signs or fly-tipping to clerk@wedmore-pc.gov.uk. Lots of small acts soon add up and really do make a difference. Every month I’m reminded just how fortunate we are to live in such a caring, active and community-minded parish. Thank you to everyone who volunteers, supports local organisations, runs community events or simply takes pride in the place we all call home. Every contribution, however big or small, helps keep Wedmore a wonderful place to live!
