Wedmore Parish Council Business
Hello friends,
As June arrives with longer days and warmer weather, it’s time to bring you another exciting update from your Parish Council. On 21 May, the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council took place. This is one of the
key moments of the year. At the meeting, we elected the Chairman and Vice Chairman for the year, reviewed the Standing Orders and Financial Regulations, along with the various other Policies and Terms of Reference and discussed ongoing and new projects for the community.
Here is the fantastic team working on your behalf:
Jacky Farley (Chairman),
Isobel Beacom (Vice Chairman),
Alistair Hopkins,
Bill Smart,
James Loughrey,
Jenny Blackshaw,
Jonathan Newton,
Lyndon Smith,
Melissa Parsons,
Phillip Weale,
Shaun Thorogood
and David Kirley.
We are also thrilled to welcome John Huntley, Valda Lewis, and Andrew Scott to our team of Parish Councillors. Their passion for the community and fresh ideas will be invaluable as we continue to serve and improve Wedmore. We look forward to working with them!
In addition to the full council, we have several committees that focus on specific areas of council work. These committees are essential in helping us focus on specific areas of village life. They allow the council to manage projects and tasks more effectively, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. If one of these committees catches your interest, why not come along and find out more?
Whether you’re passionate about sustainability, community events, or the local planning process, there’s plenty of room for you to contribute your ideas and energy. You can join as a committee member, share your views, and be part of the decision-making process. It’s a great way to get involved and make a difference in your community.
Did you know … you don’t need to be a councillor to join a committee? Here’s a breakdown of each committee and its role:
• Finance and General Purposes Committee – Oversees the council’s financial management, budgeting, and policies. Approves routine spending and ensures financial regulations are followed.
• Planning Committee – Reviews planning applications and ensures compliance with local development plans.
• Cemetery Committee – Manages the cemetery, including setting burial fees and maintaining the grounds.
• Environmental and Biodiversity Committee – Focuses on environmental sustainability, managing green spaces, and promoting biodiversity.
• Events and Community Engagement Committee – Plans community events and keeps the public informed about council activities.
• Personnel or Staffing Committee – Oversees staffing matters, including recruitment, performance, and pay.
• Public Amenities and Facilities Committee – Manages public facilities like
allotments, village halls, playgrounds, and toilets.
As ever, I want to highlight that our meetings are open to the public, and we encourage you to participate. Each meeting includes time for public participation, where you can share your views, ask questions, and contribute to discussions.
Meetings typically allow up to 15 minutes for public input, with each person speaking for a maximum of 3 minutes.
Your voice matters, and we want to hear from you! If you can’t attend a meeting in person, you can always review the minutes or get in touch with the council to share your thoughts.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement. The Parish Council is here to serve you, and every idea, every voice, and every moment you contribute helps shape the future of our community. Whether it’s attending meetings, sharing your thoughts, or volunteering, your involvement makes a real difference.
Let’s keep up the momentum and continue working together to make Wedmore a place we’re all proud to call home. Enjoy the sunshine, and I look forward to seeing you around the village!
Take care, enjoy the sunshine, and hopefully I’ll see you around the village!
