Thursday 8th, Friday 9th and Saturday 10th December Wedmore Village HallHenrik Ibsen’s 1879 masterpiece so shocked European audiences at its launch, that it closed almost immediately and Ibsen was obliged to re-write the ending. Unsurprising, then, that the powerful issue of ‘coercive control’ is as relevant today as it was 150 years ago. But now it is rightly challenged for what it is: unacceptable behaviour by a patriarchal man towards his wife. Ibsen was way ahead of his time – he confronted the questions his audiences ducked: does a husband automatically have conjugal rights over his wife on demand? Should he have sole control over the household finances? Over the care of the children? May he use physical force to control her? Does the fact that he ‘loves’ her justify any behaviour? Is she his partner or merely his doll, to play with as he wishes….? ![]() Alan Philps as Torvald and Carrie Large as NoraCarrie Large as the heroine Nora, and Alan Philps playing her controlling husband, Torvald, lead a strong cast.
