Wedmore Parish Council
Parish Council Business
Hello Friends! As the vibrant hues of summer give way to the golden tones of autumn, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the past month’s events and look forward to the exciting times ahead.
Firstly, it is with both gratitude and sadness that we bid a fond farewell to Alistair Smith. Alistair has been an unwavering pillar of support and a driving force behind numerous initiatives aimed at improving our parish. His dedication to the Wedmore Neighbourhood Plan, Highways Committee, and Finance Committee including Grant and Funding Applications, the Wedmore Village Hall Committee and the Speed Indicator Devices, has left an indelible mark on our community.
Alistair’s advocacy and tireless 8 September 2024 efforts have significantly enhanced our village, and he has been a tremendous support to me personally since I began my role as clerk. Thank you, Alistair, for your immense contributions. You will be greatly missed, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
Reflecting on recent events, the success of the Wedmore Harvest Home stands out. It was heart-warming to see so many people of all ages enjoying themselves, and for me, the event truly encapsulated what makes Wedmore a wonderful place to live. While the ongoing festivities over the August bank holiday and the excitement of the new school term are noteworthy, and I know you will all have included it as a reoccurring event on your calendars, September means it’s birthday month! 38 feels, well, as I’m still only 37 at the moment, we will have to wait and see. It does leave me wondering friends, what you were doing at 38? (if indeed you’ve reached that advanced age… – Ed)
I also need to say a special thank you to the members of the Footpath Working Party. The collaborative effort, with The Men’s Shed, has resulted in the clearance of the path from Plud Street to Sand Road. The participants also cleared the stile at the top of Mad Woman’s Lane, which now provides access to the Village Farm/ Men’s Shed. Their hard work continues as they assess other paths leading into the same fields. We are very excited at the prospect of this project and what it means for re-connecting our communities. In infrastructure news, a new speed indicator device, equipped with a solar panel, is awaiting installation. This will allow us to fix it in position permanently, and we are currently reviewing the best possible location for it. This device will be instrumental in enhancing road safety in our village which I know is a top priority for so many of you.
I also wanted to share with you that, this month, I will be embarking on my Certificate in Local Council Administration (CiLCA) qualification. A CiLCA-qualified officer is competent, efficient and effective, capable of leading and advising with confidence. Achieving this qualification not only benefits the council but also supports our aim to achieve an award under the Local Council Award Scheme. More importantly, it enables the council to declare eligibility to use the General Power of Competence, bringing significant benefits and opportunities to our community. I will need your support and involvement as I undertake this journey, so be prepared to get involved, and help us achieve something wonderful for our parish.
See you soon!
