My name is Dominic Remedios, a Masters Research Dissertation (MPhil) student at the University of Cambridge, working with the Department of Geography. My research focuses on flood risk management and how the authorities/institutions managing flood risk are viewed from the community perspective.
This project investigates flood management in Somerset, specifically how trust in the institutions managing flood risk may have changed over time. By examining how residents trust or do not trust flood management institutions, insight can be gained into communication by authorities, and the involvement of communities in flood governance.
Research focuses on Sedgemoor as it was classified as the UK’s 3rd most vulnerable area to climate change in a 2017 government report. Therefore, the area is a priority for research into improving flood management against a growing risk. Ultimately, this project hopes to contribute to enhanced understanding surrounding communication and the flow of information between residents on the Somerset Levels and institutions, in both directions.
