Friends of St. Mary’s Wedmore Presents the ‘I’m Not a Churchgoer’

Note: 1950’s photo of Wedmore St Mary’s Church – many thanks to Richard and Dorcas Martin. Picture taken from tower at Elmsett Hall!

My earliest memories of Wedmore would be about 1947 when I was 4 years old. My grandparents, Hester and Ben Howard with 2 of their daughters and eldest son owned Elmsett Hall Hotel. I seem to remember that it was a boarding school before and during the war.

See menu “Local Interests” then “History” – “Wedmore Memories” for a collection of early photographs.

If you have ticked even one ? box… or if you glance at the church clock to check the time, or enjoy the sound of the bell ringers or simply love this ancient building as the backdrop to your village lives …then you are a “churchgoer”!

At present, the cost of keeping this all village community space in good shape for us all to use falls just upon the shoulders of the regular congregation. We need to give them a hand!

The Friends of St. Mary’s has around 100 members but we need your help as well. Please join us and help look after this lovely building.
