Wedmore Parish Council

Parish Council Business

Hello everyone! Well, here we are in February, can you believe it? The days are still grey, but the snowdrops are out, and spring doesn’t feel so far away. I know it’s easy to feel bogged down in the dreariness, but brighter days
(hopefully drier ones!) are just around the corner.

Now, before I ramble too much about the weather, let’s talk about the Parish Council’s precept for the coming year. It’s been set at £122,500, a 16.67% rise compared to last year. In real terms, that’s £10.04 extra for the whole year if you’re in a Band D property, or 19p a week. For Band F properties, it’s £14.50 for the year, or 28p a week—about the price of a Freddo (one of my favourites!).

Why the Increase? We’re all feeling the pinch, and the Parish Council is no different. Somerset Council’s financial challenges have meant less funding for certain services, so we’ve had to step in. Add rising costs for utilities, insurance, and staffing, and this increase was necessary to keep things ticking along. Where’s the Money Going? This isn’t just about covering costs—your money will help us: boost flood resilience—because the weather’s only getting trickier; maintain community spaces—playgrounds, public toilets, and other amenities need looking after; deliver big projects—like the Cross Farm Pump Track and the Borough toilets refurbishment. These are mostly funded through reserves and CIL, with a bit from the precept to finish the job.

Why It Matters. This funding ensures we can: step in where Somerset Council can’t; keep Wedmore’s facilities in great shape; and support projects that bring real benefits to the village. Let’s Keep Wedmore Special! At the end of the day, we all want where we live to be wonderful. How does the song go? ‘Everybody needs good neighbours…’. Whether it’s lending a hand in a storm, chatting in The Borough, or simply keeping our village a warm, welcoming place, we all play a part. If you’ve got any questions about the precept—or anything else—pop along to a meeting or send me an email. It’s your village, your precept, and your voice matters!

Thanks, as always, for your support. Let’s look forward to some sunshine soon!
